Not surprisingly, a leader’s personality is a major component of how he leads his subordinates and his success in such an endeavor. To make a difficult task more even more intricate, leadership involves interacting with individuals ranging from a few to a few hundred strong, all with personalities and circumstances in life equally complex as the leader himself. Despite the odds against them, stories of excellent leaders are ubiquitous and consist of many different types of people doing the leading in many walks of life. In addition to the anecdotal evidence supporting the role of desirable personality traits being involved in the formation of a good leader it can be seen through experience and history that certain traits are more beneficial than others. Especially when the scope is narrowed down to more specific career paths, personalities and their desired traits can be determined more effectively. This is particularly accurate when examining military professionals, a gro up whose history, successes, and failures are closely recorded in texts throughout the ages. In my own endeavor to establish a base from which to dissect my personality and how it plays into my role as a second-class cadet at USAFA and in the future I took a ‘Big 5’ personality test and asked several peers, subordinates, and past leaders to provide feedback regarding my past and continually growing leadership experience.
